Let me summarize how life has become even more difficult in the past 24 hours. First of all, Supermum lost her job yesterday. Just like that, my parents are both unemployed and we are uninsured come May. How can hard-working, honest, creative, energetic and thoughtful people be dismissed? What kind of mother-fucking, conservative, gun-toting jerks dismiss my mom, the most tolerant, easy-going person I know? I can’t wrap my mind around it, so I’ll leave it at that for now.
Secondly, I really like my nutritionist, but even I cannot fully appreciate one’s expertise when one tells me that I cannot consume starches of any sort for a month. After that month of letting my stomach and other organs heal, I can try and see how much starch I can tolerate.
This is all too intense to dwell on right now, so I’m signing off. I usually wouldn’t say something like this: but keep us in your thoughts.

Body Image And The Media
I’m often asked to provide quotes and commentary to the media about eating disorders and body image. Sometimes, I’m told where the interview will appear, and other times, (no laughing!), I find my words by periodically googling myself. Recently, I answered a reporter’s questions via email. I’m not sure if my words will appear in …

Body Appreciation Day
Since today is body appreciation day, I dug up an old blog post of mine that I wrote on Thanksgiving last year. Here’s what I had to say: In the last 14 years, I spent an uncountable amount of hours staring at myself in the mirror, looking for imaginary fat or checking if one could see any …
BMI Report Cards Fail Professional Support
Recently, the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) issued a position statement on Body Mass Index (BMI)/weight reporting in New York City Public Schools. The grade? Big fail. The AED opposes BMI report cards, referred to as “Fitnessgrams,” in New York City on several grounds. According to their press release, “Although the New York Department of …
Blogging On Blogging
“You like me, right now, you like me!” These fairly famous words spoken by Sally Field in 1985 when she accepted her Academy Award were scoffed at by some but resonated with thousands of others across the country who appreciated the authentic, ingenuous, and unscripted honesty of her reaction. Call it projection, but I thought …
Black Or White
As a psychologist, I’m quick to point out all-or-nothing thinking – the kind of thought pattern that polarizes things into categories of good and bad or, really, any two camps – without leaving room for the middle ground. So, it may come as a surprise to hear me say that I think professionals and products …
