Let me summarize how life has become even more difficult in the past 24 hours. First of all, Supermum lost her job yesterday. Just like that, my parents are both unemployed and we are uninsured come May. How can hard-working, honest, creative, energetic and thoughtful people be dismissed? What kind of mother-fucking, conservative, gun-toting jerks dismiss my mom, the most tolerant, easy-going person I know? I can’t wrap my mind around it, so I’ll leave it at that for now.
Secondly, I really like my nutritionist, but even I cannot fully appreciate one’s expertise when one tells me that I cannot consume starches of any sort for a month. After that month of letting my stomach and other organs heal, I can try and see how much starch I can tolerate.
This is all too intense to dwell on right now, so I’m signing off. I usually wouldn’t say something like this: but keep us in your thoughts.

Orthorexia: When Healthy Becomes Obsession

I became a master calculator —not only of calories, but protein, carbohydrate, and fat content as well. I measured all of my portions with precision. Grocery shopping took hours as I read each and every label to figure out if it fit into my rigid diet. Orthorexia: When healthy becomes obsession Eggs, non-fat milk, wholegrain …

Orthorexia: The “Healthy” Eating Disorder

Artwork by Jessica Grundy via Etsy.com What is Orthorexia? The term orthorexia is derived from the Greek word, “ortho” meaning “right” or “correct” and “orexis” meaning “appetite.” The literal meaning is “correct diet.”  Orthorexia was introduced in 1997 by Dr. Steven Bratman to be used as a parallel with other eating disorders, such as anorexia …

Only Words?

5 Words on My Experience with Anorexia: Misery I cannot describe those 14 years in other words but misery. I was miserable from the moment I woke up until the moment I went to sleep. Everything felt worthless. Life seemed to be about agony. I couldn’t see what other people found so worth-wile about it. …

On Being Called “Fat”

Here at Libero Network we’ve started a movement called “Stop Fitspiration” (#StopFitspiration), and, as many of you know, we’ve also received a lot of criticism from the ‘Fitspo’ people for this movement. This week, however, the criticism turned personal and they began attacking me. More specifically they called me ‘Fat’. Saying (paraphrased): “No wonder …

Olympic Pride

As the Olympic fever has settled,  I’ve paused to reflect on this year’s games. By all appearances, the London Olympics celebrated the female athlete.  More women competed in these games than any in history.  More American women made the team than men, and they won their fair share of our nation’s hefty gold medal count. …

OA (Oh No?)

12-step programs have guided countless individuals to sobriety and recovery.  I’ve worked with patients who fully attribute their substance abuse recovery to participation in “the rooms.”  While some patients never take to the fellowship, citing a variety of objections (e.g., don’t like the idea of a higher power, feel the organization is cultish, etc.), many find …

Nutritional Recommendations

Recently, I attended an eating disorders talk given by a well-known local dietitian.  Boy, was I in for a surprise! The R.D.’s talk centered around the benefits of proteins, the dangers of carbs.  Toward the end, she gave us some sample high-protein breakfasts, including a couple she routinely eats. Each contained about 50% of the  calories …
