Fast Food And Depression Connection Established

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada found that eating commercial baked goods and fast food are strongly linked to depression. These findings are consistent with other previous studies.

Regular consumers of fast food more likely to develop depression

Study results find that people who consumed fast food on a regular basis were over 50 percent more likely to develop depression. The results were dose specific, meaning the more fast food the person ate the greater the connection.

Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author on the study, said, “the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression.”

But, “even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression,” says another researcher involved in the study. Depression is also linked to eating disorders and the two may have a downward spiral effect.

Sánchez-Villegas concludes:

“Although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being.”
