SAMHSA And TJP Partner For Consumer-Driven Discussion Of EDs

The Joy Project staffers Serena Iacono and Joy Nollenberg traveled to Rockville, MD, to give a presentation on Empowerment in Eating Disorder Recovery.
The presentation was sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services, Office of Consumer Affairs, in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, and was offered as part of their “Food For Thought” series. The purpose of the series is to provide information on issues faced by consumers of various mental health services, in order to provoke discussion, increase understanding, and outline paths for future change. Topics covered in the presentation included: Common ED myths, the treatment-seeking experience from the consumer perspective, barriers to getting treatment, and innovative ways to promote recovery through empowerment and peer support.
The Joy Project and SAMHSA intend to continue working towards promoting consumer-driven services as another means of support for those who are affected by eating disorders or other mental illness.
