Let me summarize how life has become even more difficult in the past 24 hours. First of all, Supermum lost her job yesterday. Just like that, my parents are both unemployed and we are uninsured come May. How can hard-working, honest, creative, energetic and thoughtful people be dismissed? What kind of mother-fucking, conservative, gun-toting jerks dismiss my mom, the most tolerant, easy-going person I know? I can’t wrap my mind around it, so I’ll leave it at that for now.
Secondly, I really like my nutritionist, but even I cannot fully appreciate one’s expertise when one tells me that I cannot consume starches of any sort for a month. After that month of letting my stomach and other organs heal, I can try and see how much starch I can tolerate.
This is all too intense to dwell on right now, so I’m signing off. I usually wouldn’t say something like this: but keep us in your thoughts.

Why I Choose To Eat Intuitively And How You Can, Too
A friend visited weeks ago and asked how I don’t go overboard on all the treats I have stocked in my kitchen cupboard (when she visits, she does a self-acknowledged mini-raid). “How is it that you’re not always eating this stuff?” she wondered, and I replied, “Because it’s always here.” When you decide to loosen …
Why I Blog
Eight years ago, when I started this blog, I ventured to write a book about the toxic culture of disordered eating, exposing the normalization of eating problems and body dissatisfaction. Has this culture improved in almost a decade of writing? Not so much. In fact, recent research has alarmed us to the dangers of social …
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO WORK IN THE EATING DISORDER RECOVERY FIELD (PART 2)
Karen Kay via Etsy.com Due to popular demand, today we are looking at the positions on an eating disorder treatment team and the necessary certificates and schooling that go with each. What You Need To Do To Work In The Eating Disorder Recovery Field (Part 1)
The inbox of our Facebook and Twitter pages are always rolling with questions about treatment, insurance, volunteering and services for eating disorder recovery. However, the most predominant question we get is “How do I get a job at the Victorian?” Today we answer this question. I will first go over some basic requirements for working …
What We Can Do: Day 5 NEDA Week
Despite the well known saying, talk is NOT cheap, Advertisers spend billions of dollars each year on ads telling us and selling us body hate messages. And unless we unplug completely and live in a Samadhi Tank, we can not avoid the media completely. And yes, it can be overwhelming and very seductive. But try …
What The Holidays Are Really About (Hint: It’s Not Food)
The hardest part when it comes to Eating Disorder recovery and the holidays is the food. And not just the food we see and eat, but the food talk as well. It’s all well and good if a family doesn’t really think the holidays revolve around stuffing and shortbread, but if food is all they …
What September 11 Reminds Us About Eating Disorder Recovery
Today many of our eating disorder clients are rehashing where they were on September 11, 2001. Some were in high school, others in college, some were taking care of children and in the peaks of their career. The contrast of their lives 11 years ago versus being in eating disorder treatment today is dramatically different. …
What’s Good For The Goose
I am in love with Lake Merritt in Oakland. I have been walking around this lake almost daily for years and cherish the sights, sounds, smells, and quixotic events that I encounter with each outing. Occasionally (as Pooh would say) some Not Very Nice things happen on my rambles but overall a large part of …
What Is ‘Fitspiration’, Anyways?
Fitspiration: Images or messages similar to ‘Thinspiration’ but focused on exercise. Rather than promoting a commitment to exercise for the sake of one’s health, Fitspirational messages equate exercise with ‘perfecting’ one’s body – contributing to negative body image and compulsive exercising behaviours. ~ Lauren Bersaglio There’s something new buzzing around Twitter, Pinterest, and other …
What Healthy Weight Week Means To Me
Hello again! Wow, two blogs in one week? That is unheard of! I am sorry to be taking up too much of your time but I figure you can always just delete this from your inbox if you are feeling too inundated by Dr. Deah notifications! And this will be quick, albeit, a tad interactive. …
