Have you been standing in the checkout line a lot these days? Have you noticed it seems like you cannot throw a rock and not hit a magazine cover with somebody on it who is in the headlines for either being too big, too small, or just right?
The world has pretty much caught a bad case of stereotyping, and it makes the pressure to be thin, beautiful and perfect overwhelming sometimes.
Marketers and advertisers are the ones who are contagious and are spreading it with the lie after lie they tell us by putting airbrushed, photo-shopped, and computer generated models out there to sell their products.
It’s a whole world out there of silicone, botox, implants, bleaching, waxing, plumping, sucking, plucking and tucking. Stores are stocked with racks of “skinny jeans” worn by even skinnier lifeless mannequins. It’s not easy to escape, and even if you try to, all these messages that “thin is the new pretty” can’t help but slip into your consciousness.
The average American household makes $46,326 dollars per year, which makes it pretty hard to afford gym memberships, personal trainers, and laser skin treatments. The average woman is just about 5′ 4″ and weighs 152 pounds. The average size of a runway design is 1-2.
This is quite a conundrum now isn’t? We are all salmon swimming against the current. We are trying to put our square bodies in the round hole society projects on us and it’s causing a lot of problems.
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health estimates that 8 million Americans (seven million women and one million men) have an eating disorder. Anorexia Nervosa has the highest death rate of any psychiatric illness (including major depression). Without treatment, up to 20% of people with serious eating disorders die. With treatment, the mortality rate falls to 2-3%.
Pretty sad statistics, and the worst part is we are seeing an increase in young adolescent boys and girls developing eating disordered behavior as young as 9 and 10 years old.
There is a way to beat all this, but it takes effort, determination, and acceptance of ourselves and our bodies to combat the messages that tell us we are not good enough.
The strong message at Rader Programs is to help those who suffer from eating disorders find peace and to educate their families, friends, and society in general about the serious dangers involved in this disease.
We are extremely proud of that, our facility, it’s program and our Staff. Rader Program’s goal is to provide nothing but the most positive experience for our patients.
Our philosophy is not one based on levels, punishment or rewards, and that’s what makes us special.
We believe that those who suffer should learn to feel what it is that is causing them to use food as their coping mechanism, work through them, and then slowly learn to merge back into the real world.
At Rader Rrograms we treat our patients as adults and we help them get in touch with who they really are without the diagnosis they have been dragging around for so long.
Recovery is a process, it’s not something that just happens overnight, and we know that.
It is possible to break through and although we cannot do it for you, we can do it with you.
