esangeleyes – 03/17/2010 – 05:57

I am a very concerned mom who needs to find Psychiatric follow-up for my daughter. I live on the far east end of Long Island, New York, and I am appauled at how many refusals I received for help due to the fact of her age (17), they just don’t accept insurance (and expect that you will and can pay cash upfront for such needed help), or just plain hesitate when they hear a diagnosis of an eating disorder. I need help on this issue!!!!!!! Any suggestions.

Thanks So Much I Will Try

Thanks so much I will try them. Let you know!

Hi, I Was Reading The Posts
Modernmom – 02/27/2012 – 01:30
Hi,

I was reading the posts here and I was wondering; have you entertained the possibility of crossing over into NJ for treatment for your daughters? I am a recovering anorexic and I was admitted to an eating disorder unit in a hospital in Denville NJ, it’s called St. claires eating disorder medical center. I was there for 3+ months when I was 13 years old ( I am now 39 years old with two teenage children)
Although I was able to keep from being readmitted to the hospital after I got out of it, I have struggled through the years with the anorexia and I currently still struggle but I am able to live an active functioning life, there is a lot to be said for that. My children are what keeps me going and they help prevent me from spiralling downhill too much. My own daughter is 15 years old and has been obsessing over her weight a lot as of recently. She feels she needs to lose weight, but she is quite thin to begin with and she def. Does not need to lose any weight. She is not out of control with her thoughts and actions the way that I was and still am at times. I am a full time nursing student so that goes a long way in being able to reason with my daughter about her health and the risks and complications to her health if she doesn’t eat. She looks up to me due to me studying nursing, she trusts my advice. If you ever feel like you would like me to speak your daughters about their struggles with not eating I would be more then happy too……often times it can be very helpful to talk to someone who has had the same struggles 🙂 you can email me at [email protected]

The best of luck to both of you moms and your daughters!
Just don’t give up on them, they need you even though they may seem like they don’t want anything to do with you.

Also, keep in mind, their unwillingness to eat is stemming from something or more then one thing going on in their lives and they feel like their life is out of control so they use the food as a means to control SOMETHING!! Everyone needs a vice of some kind…..
You may even suggest to your daughters that they get a pet of their choice, if they don’t already have one and if your in a position to get them a pet……it often helps to have someone or something else that distracts them from their illness…..just a thought 🙂
