Hi:
There’s no one way to tell your Mom that you might have an eating disorder, but I can offer you some suggestions that may help make it a little easier.
Everyone is different (including your Mom!) and it is not unusual for people to react in unexpected ways when they hear difficult news. For example, some people become very emotional. Others may feel guilty themselves, and react defensively. The important thing for you to remember is that your Mom’s feelings and reactions are just that – not a reflection on you. In other words, you are not responsible for your Mom’s reaction to the news that you might have an eating disorder.
Some individuals find it easier to share this type of news with another person present. This could be a trusted family member or friend, a counselor, doctor, or anyone who is trustworthy and will be able to offer you support.
Sometimes, writing the information down is helpful. This gives your Mom some time to take in what you are saying, without having to respond right away. It also gives you a chance to think through what you want to say without the pressure of being in front of your Mom.
You may decide that it would be better for you to tell your Mom directly. In this case, it usually works best if you choose a quiet location free from distractions, at a time that works for both of you (it’s hard for your Mom to hear difficult news if she has to rush off to work for example).
It takes a lot of courage to open up about the possibility of having an eating disorder. However, it is important to share this news in order to get the support that you need. It’s emotionally exhausting trying to keep an eating disorder hidden, and you may find that you feel a sense of relief once your Mom is aware.
