Hi:
The person you are describing requires treatment for her eating disorder as well as an assessment of her suicide risk.
Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the diagnosis part of this illness, that we fail to recognize the severity of the symptoms that the person is experiencing. An individual does not need to fit all the criteria for anorexia nervosa in order to access treatment.
While many people associate anorexia nervosa with having a “serious problem”, EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified) is an equally devastating illness. The important issue here is that the person you are describing is suffering and needs help.
Most people require professional help in order to overcome their eating disorder. The sooner treatment is begun, the better; individuals who struggle with their eating disorder for many years generally experience a more difficult course of illness.
If at any time, you believe a person is suicidal, it is extremely important to get help right away.
There is a lot of care and support available for persons with eating disorders, their friends, and families. This is a difficult illness that impacts the whole family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
Hope this helps a little.
