Define Life – 11/16/2009 – 10:06

I have been in recovery from bulimia for over a year now. Since recovery I have had very swollen parotid glands. They do not hurt but they swell up more when I eat. Is this normal? I have had blood tests, ultrasounds to check for stones and a visit to the ENT and he said everything looked fine. Whats going on? Its REALLY embarrassing

Hello! I’m Sorry This Is
janurse427 – 11/18/2009 – 06:47

Hello! I’m sorry this is still going on for you. The reason this happens is that after being bulimic, your glands are naturally overstimulated. Even when the behavior stops, when you eat, the glands are naturally stimulated once again, but they have not normalized in terms of their overreaction yet. But I believe they will. For some people it takes a long time, but it should be improving soon. If you are still having problems in a month or so, you may want to check with your doctor again. Congratulations on your recovery! Try to be patient. This should resolve. Take care.

Thankyou for your reply, is this common then?

I have been very patient, but at least now I am over the addiction side of it.

I’m so happy for you that you are doing so much better! Congratulations!
This is not uncommon, but the length of time that it takes to resolve is very individual. Because you have seen an ENT about this, I would suggest you try to continue to be patient, and celebrate your health! Wishing you the best!!

Its kind of hard to not stimulate my glands because im eating so much tryin to put on weight as my metabolism is fast. Should I be eating less so that my glands are less stimulated?

No! You Should Stick To

No! You should stick to whatever your eating plan is for weight restoration. Try to be patient and trust that this will normalize. It will! If you once again begin to restrict your food, you could set yourself up to begin to binge/purge again. Please don’t jeopardize your recovery. I am sorry that this is happening, but it WILL resolve. Take care..Jan

Do Other Bulimics Glands
Define Life – 12/08/2009 – 13:51

Do other bulimics glands swell in recovery when they eat something as well?

Not Always. It Is Different

Not always. It is different for everyone. Your glands may be more sensitive than some other people’s. You may want to see your doctor again and see if he/she has any suggestions. Good luck!!
