What Would Barbie Look Like As A ‘Real Woman’?
The most iconic doll in the world has undergone yet another makeover – sort of.
In April, an artist created pictures of
what Barbie would look like without any makeup on, and now another artist is showing how the doll might appear if she were modeled after the measurements of an average 19-year-old girl.
Artist Nickolay Lamm, 24, created a 3-D model that he digitally altered to look like Barbie, which he then photographed next to a normal Barbie doll. The differences are striking: Lamm’s doll has much wider hips, thicker thighs, a rounder bottom and even a shorter neck.
Too thin, even for a model
In his research, Lamm found that, scaled to human size, a Barbie would have a 36-inch back, an 18-inch waist and 33-inch hips – measurements that not even most supermodels have. If she were real, she would weigh about 110 pounds with a BMI of 16.24, which would classify her as anorexic. The average woman, he claims, has a 38-inch back, a 34-inch waist and 40-inch hips.
Lamm says he has received a lot criticism for his work, but that attacking Barbie is no different than criticizing thin models.
“We should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls,” Lamm said in an article on the Daily Mail. “Furthermore, a realistically proportioned Barbie actually looks pretty good in the pictures I produced.”
The artist also notes that, if making a realistic-looking Barbie could help prevent negative influences on young girls, Mattel ought to think about making one.
“Barbie looks good as an average sized woman in America,” he said.
