Hudson’s Bay Company Pulls ‘Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels’ T-Shirt After Criticism
Hudson’s Bay Company became the target of a social media whirlwind this week after featuring a t-shirt with the infamous Kate Moss quote, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”
A Toronto-based photographer, Kristin Foster, tweeted a photo of the shirt on Monday while at one of the company’s Canadian stores.
A Twitter storm quickly erupted, with many people accusing Hudson Bay Company of promoting anorexia and encouraging eating disorders.
“The nutritional break down of that is 0% of your daily recommended dose of self confidence,” user @anitabot tweeted.
The shirt also caught the attention of Brian Cuban, brother of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who is famous for his book “Shattered Image: My triumph over Body Dysmorphic Disorder.” Cuban called the shirt “a terrible food shaming and eating disorder triggering slogan.”
Just a joke?
The shirt, which positions the quote inside an enlarged standard nutrition facts food label, wasn’t actually intended to be a negative statement – at least according to the designer.
Canadian artist Christopher Lee Sauvé said he created the design as a protest against anorexia and the “absurd” remarks made in the fashion industry.
“The design was not intended to be pro-anorexia but the opposite,” he tweeted.
Sauvé also released a statement on Tuesday to further address the issue:
“Most if not all of my designs showcase some type of statement pointing out the absurdity of fashion, and this one item is no exception,” he said. “I fully understand and comprehend the severity of an eating disorder and I do not condone celebrating such pain. My sincerest apologies to anyone that I have offended with my designs. I believe wholeheartedly in my work, however, and I can’t apologize for that.”
