Victoria’s Secret Trainer Gives Healthy Living Advice

While Victoria’s Secret models don’t exactly represent a diverse body type, they may be getting better health and nutrition advice than people think.

The Victoria’s Secret fashion show aired Tuesday evening, which included a strong emphasis on the models being seen in an athletic, healthy light.

“It feels like we’re training for the Olympics,” one model said.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, Vanessa Packer – nutritionist and founder of ModelFit – spoke about how she trains her famous clientele, which includes Victoria’s Secret models.

Here are some tips that Packer had for women – models or not – who want to get in shape and be their healthiest selves:

1. Don’t restrict

Packer says she doesn’t believe in restricting foods if it’s not necessary.

“I believe in balance,” she states.

Listening to your body is the best approach, and you don’t have to eliminate entire food groups – like carbs – to get results.

“The no-carb rule isn’t totally true. Some people digest carbs really easily, others don’t.”

2. Avoid liquid diets.

While it might seem like Victoria’s Secret models would be prone to fasting or juicing, Packer doesn’t recommend this strategy to her clients.

“We’re not proponents of juicing, just juicing, but we do incorporate a juice into your daily experiences … having those green juices every day in the morning after working out,” she says.

Packer also highlights the importance of breakfast, and recommends oatmeal.

3. Vary your workout routine.

Excessive cardio isn’t the answer to getting fit, Packer explains.

She recommends mixing up your exercise routine to challenge – and change – your body by working different muscle groups.

“Leading up to the show in particular, [the models] will do a mix — either they’ll start their week off with more cardio and then get into more of toning…then stretching.”

4. Rest

The pressure associated with “being your best” can be exhausting, Parker says, which is why she is such a proponent of down time.

“One thing we always try to incorporate is rest as well as pushing yourself.”
