‘EMBRACE’ Documentary Explores Why Body Loathing Is So Common

Taryn Brumfitt is on a mission to help women stop body-shaming themselves.

The photographer and mom from Adelaide, AU, was put in the spotlight last year when she decided to share a unique before and after photo mash-up – but it wasn’t what you’d expect.

Instead, Brumfitt’s before picture is an image of her looking toned and tan during a bodybuilding competition. The after picture is her with sensuous curves and a little extra weight.

Now, Brumfitt has created a Kickstarter campaign in hopes to create a documentary called “EMBRACE,” which will explore the concept of body loathing.

The idea, Brumfitt said, came when she realized she could never pass down a healthy body image to her daughter if she was constantly criticizing herself.

“How am I ever going to teach Mikaela to love her body as it is if her Mummy can’t do the same?” she wrote on her website. “How am I ever going to encourage her to accept and love the parts of her body that she doesn’t like without being a walking contradiction?”

‘It’s taken a lot of effort, time and energy’

Brumfitt said the journey to her new place of empowerment was a long one, but she’s committed to helping other women learn to love what they see in the mirror.

“I can tell you there is nothing better than a.) loving your body wholeheartedly, lumps and bumps and all and b.) telling society where they can shove their ideals of beauty,” she wrote in a blog post.

If Brumfitt can raise $200,00, she’s confident she can make the film and help redefine the way women talk, think, and feel about their bodies.
