Anorexic Women More Likely To Experience Unplanned Pregnancies

Unplanned Pregnancies

A new study performed by researchers and scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have discovered that women who are suffering from anorexia nervous have a higher rate of unplanned pregnancies than any other group of women.

The Misconception about Pregnancy & Anorexia

Cynthia M. Bulik, PhD, the study’s lead author and director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program believes that many women who have anorexia do not understand that just because they skip menstrual cycles or their menstrual cycle disappears completely these woman do not realize they can and do still ovulate which can result in pregnancy. “Anorexia is not a good contraceptive,” Bulik said. “Just because you’re not menstruating, or because you’re menstruating irregularly, doesn’t mean you’re not at risk for becoming pregnant.”

Recent Study

A recent study indicated that women who are anorexic become pregnant at an early age, more often and have more abortions than women who do not suffer from anorexia, which can cause even more serious health conditions.
