The Dangers Of Not Eating

I have often said that eating disorders must be the saddest illnesses in the world, since the people afflicted with these kinds of diseases do not get to enjoy the pleasures of eating. I have a friend who is bulimic, and it is such a pity to see her eat so voraciously as if there is no tomorrow, only to throw it all up later when nobody is looking. Where is the pleasure in that?
But aside from the fact that these people do not enjoy eating, they also face health problems that can be potentially life-threatening. The first, and most obvious, problem is malnutrition. This can happen not just in eating less, but in overeating as well. What energy would our body generate if there are no nutrients being received?
Another dangerous problem in eating disorders is dehydration. This is more life-threatening than malnutrition, since dehydration can affect a lot of bodily functions in just a short span of time. It can lead to death if not treated right away. Dehydration is often coupled with electrolyte imbalances, which may interfere with different body activities, especially in the pumping of the heart.
So you see, eating disorders are perhaps the most fatal psychological disorder because of its physiological consequences. If you, or someone you know, have an eating disorder, do not hesitate to get help.
