5-10% of the population of women and girls in the US suffer from eating disorders of one form or another. One million boys and men suffer from eating disorders. 10% of female college students suffer eating disorders. One in a hundred American women purge or induce vomiting to lose weight. 15% of young people in the US suffer from eating disorders. 10% of these young people are male. One in 3 dieters suffers from a psychological problem related eating disorder. Americans spend $109 million on dieting and diet related products.
The statistics are important because they can be used to show patients the dangers of being too thin and to bring them back to the path of good health.
