Fighting Insurance Companies
Experts agree that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate amongst mental illnesses. If that’s so, why do insurance companies fight so hard to deny coverage for ED treatment? Mostly because there are no easy (i.e inexpensive and fast) treatments.
A recent CBS 2 report looked at the issue, specifically focusing on cases in Illinois. The reporter saud said that experts “admit insurance companies are increasingly issuing denials or reducing coverage because of concerns about increasing mental health costs linked to health care reform.”
If you or someone you know requires inpatient or intensive outpatient care, then the finances are going to play a significant role. Talk to the inpatient team and look for a company/agency/office that has a dedicated staff member who successfully negotiates with health insurance companies – that is, if you are fortunate enough to have a choice of providers.
