The “New” Eating Disorder – Orthorexia

The word new in this case simply implies the latest eating disorder, which has been around since 1977 and is orthorexia. Many doctors blame society for this eating disorder. It seems everywhere you look you see something related to health and obesity. Weight loss surgeries are on the rise, people (mainly woman) are joining every weight loss program from Jenny Craig to Weight Watchers.

Who is effected by Orthorexia

Orthorexia can affect anyone however, it is usually an eating disorder that women over the age of 30 suffer from. These women are also classified as well educated and have at least a medium-class income. These women will only eat specific foods such as organic or kosher foods. Most are vegetarians or vegans and at the very least they follow a very strict diet of what they believe is the healthiest of foods.

Conclusion

Often times their diets are so strict and restricted that they become malnourished and can easily develop other medical issues. They also feel that their “diet” is the only correct diet and everyone should eat what they do this can cause social problems for these women and men.
