Replacement Of Growth Hormone Increases Bone Density For Obese
According to a recent study at the University of Alabama, those with abdominal obesity may benefit from growth hormone replacement. Those who struggle with obesity often have a reduced level of growth hormone. This makes obese woman more apt to have osteoporosis.
The study was done at the Birmingham campus of the college and spanned a period of 6 months. Researchers monitored the amount of muscle mass, vitamin D levels, bone marrow fat and bone formation of approximately 80 women. Researchers found that those with the greatest loss of abdominal fat also had the greatest increase in bone formation. They also found that those with the greatest vitamin D increase also experienced greater bone formation.
The study findings may point toward new treatments for bone loss in obese patients; however the costs of treatment with human growth hormone may limit the wide spread use of the drug.
