What Parents Need To Know And Watch Out For

Like all other physiological and psychological illnesses, eating disorders have its own set of risk factors that parents need to watch out for. One of these is that eating disorders are common to adolescents, for the reason that adolescence signals a big transition in one’s life. There are a lot of body changes happening in a girl’s life during adolescence, and one of them is gaining weight. Therefore, some teenage girls may feel insecure about their body, especially since the media puts slim women in the pedestal.
Another risk factor is peer pressure and even familial pressure, which reaches its peak during adolescence. Teens may feel that they do not have any control over the things that they are experiencing, which is why they resort to controlling their food intake.
Those who live in an abusive environment also tend to develop eating disorders. Either they will restrict their food to make them feel in control, or they would resort to binge eating in the hope of finding comfort in the food that they eat.
As parents, the most that you can do is to support and understand your child in one of the most difficult times of her life. That way, your adolescent will be well-guided in her road to adulthood.
