Hi:

Eating disorders in men are probably more common than people realize since they are often under-reported and go undiagnosed.

Your question regarding puberty brings up some important issues. Everyone is different, and there can be quite a bit of individual variation regarding the timing of puberty, and how it impacts each person. In other words, everyone’s experience is unique – and while some males experience puberty as young as 9 years of age, others may not reach sexual maturation until they are in their mid or late teens.

However, an eating disorder can disrupt this process by interfering with the production of hormones that are needed for puberty to take place. A hormone called leptin is required, which is produced by fat tissue in the body. Without leptin, the hormones that control sexual maturation are not produced, and puberty does not occur.

There are a number of other medical reasons why an individual may experience delayed puberty. For this reason, it is best to get checked out by a medical doctor. A physician will evaluate your particular case, and may also be able to prescribe treatment. There are various therapies available (including hormone replacement) to treat delayed puberty in men.

I would also encourage you to reach out for help with your eating disorder. You are not alone with this, and there is a lot of support and help available.

Take care.
