Eating Disorders- Its All In The Mind

Eating disorders are psychological problems that do great damage to the metabolism of a patient. Eating disorders are caused by psychological, social, family and biological problems that make the patient behave abnormally.

The psychological problems that cause eating disorders are low self esteem, feelings of inadequacy, lack of control, depression, anxiety and anger. Family problems like alcoholic parents, difficulty in expressing oneself or abuse cause eating disorders. Social problems like society’s misconception that if a person has to look good they need to be thin or if the patient is the victim of constant teasing about their size causes eating disorders. Biological problems causing eating disorders include the malfunctioning of chemicals in the brain that control appetite causing appetite loss and hereditary genetic problems. Sometimes a combination of problems could cause eating disorders. Statistics show that 1-2 out of every 100 children in the U.S. suffer from eating disorders.
