Amy Schumer Just Wants Women To Feel Better About Themselves

There’s nothing unusual about women actresses posing nude, but what isn’t so normal are women like Amy Schumer – who openly defy stereotypes about body image and challenge the public to think differently about what makes a woman beautiful.

In a recent photoshoot with Annie Leibovitz for the new Pirelli Calendar, Schumer posed semi-nude with just a pair of underwear and high heels on. In the photo, she’s holding a cup of coffee, exposing the rolls on her stomach and wearing an expressive, open face for the camera.

Schumer recently posted the photo to Instagram with the caption, “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman.”

‘It’s an emotional thing’

The actress-writer-comedian has long been open when it comes to talking about confidence, body image and feeling good about herself as a women.

In an interview with TODAY earlier this year, Schumer said it’s been “an emotional thing,” and that standing on stage in front of people requires a certain amount of self-assuredness.

It wasn’t until Schumer met stylist Leesa Evans that she learned how to find her own style and become more confident in her own skin.

“And I just wanted to give it to every woman,” the actress said of her work with Goodwill of Southern California, where she has helped to teach and empower women through fashion.

This year’s Pirelli Calendar, which often includes pictures of supermodels like Kate Moss or Naomi Campbell, will feature powerful women from around the world who are distinguished in all areas, not just their looks.

“The goal was to be very straightforward,” Leibovitz said in a statement. “I wanted the pictures to show the women exactly as they are, with no pretense.”

Schumer wants women to know that Hollywood standards aren’t realistic to emulate, either.

“I’m coming out like, ‘OK, here’s what’s going on: No one’s just naturally thin. Everyone’s starving,'” she said.

Other models in the calendar will include Serena Williams, Yoko Ono, blogger Tavi Gevinson and Lucasfilm producer Kathleen Kennedy.
