‘Smart’ Tooth Knows When You Overeat – Would You Wear It?

A visit to the doctor’s office can easily turn into fudging the facts about your health habits.

But for people who are trying to lose weight or develop healthier eating habits, a new “smart” tooth gadget can recognize when they’ve been eating, talking, smoking or even coughing – and it can send that information right to their doctors.

Oral sensory system

The device, created by researchers at National Taiwan University in Taipei, is a wearable oral sensory system. The saliva-proof gadget is placed inside an artificial tooth, where a small accelerometer detects movements in the mouth that sends information to the researchers.

As of now, the device has only been used on dentures. A version for real teeth is next on the agenda, with hopefully the wireless capabilities to send communication about the wearer’s habits via Bluetooth.

“Because the mouth is an opening into human health, this oral sensory system has the potential to enhance exiting (sic) oral-related healthcare monitoring applications such as dietary tracking,” the researchers wrote.

The research team will present its findings at the International Symposium on Wearable Computers in September.
